ConvaTec has announced the new use of its AQUACEL foam dressings in protecting bed- and wheelchair-bound patients with skin breakdown, caused due to the forces of gravity and friction.

Available in adhesive and non-adhesive options and in various shapes and sizes, the AQUACEL foam dressings combine a soft absorbent foam pad with a gel-forming AQUACEL contact layer.

The dressing prevents the skin breakdown by transforming into a gel upon contact with moisture, and without the outward spread of fluid.

In addition, AQUACEL foam provides a waterproof, viral and bacterial barrier to protect skin from incontinence episodes that can lead to hard-to-manage and, in severe cases, deadly skin infections.

In vitro tests, conducted on AQUACEL foam dressing, showed a 75% reduction in skin-damaging friction compared to traditional Mepilex Border dressings.

CWOCN Health First Palm Bay Hospital spokesperson Shawna Philbin said, "AQUACEL foam dressing offers tremendous wound management benefits."
